New Directorship - Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research (CIDER)
A/Prof Emma Kalk has been appointed the new Director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research (CIDER) as of 01 June 2024. Emma is a clinical epidemiologist who joined CIDER in 2014. She works closely with colleagues in the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health and Wellness managing joint projects and supporting routine data optimization. Her research interests include infectious and therapeutic exposures during pregnancy and maternal and infant/child outcomes, aiming to provide evidence in support of policy and implementation. She is deputy convenor of Health in Context, the 4th year MBChB Public Health module and represents CIDER and the Division of Public Health Medicine on School and Faculty committees.
Emma takes over the reins from Prof Mary-Ann Davies who was CIDER Director from 1 October 2017 to 31 May 2024. Mary-Ann will continue in her role as a Public Health Medicine specialist and Professor jointly appointed to the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health and Wellness and the Division of Public Health Medicine.
