Title: Investigation into factors influencing DNA reference sample submission and public trust in missing persons cases in the Western Cape.

Supervisors: A/Prof Laura Heathfield & Dr Donna-Lee Martin.

Thesis description: The rationale for this study is grounded in the central role of reference sample submission in missing persons investigations and the ethical, legal, and social concerns associated with providing personal genetic material. In South Africa, high rates of missing persons place significant strain on forensic and investigative systems and obtaining DNA reference samples from family members is often essential for identification and kinship matching. However, the effectiveness and legitimacy of these processes depend not only on technical accuracy but also on public trust, informed consent, and perceptions of fairness. Families of missing persons occupy a particularly vulnerable position due to the emotional and psychological distress associated with a missing loved one, while also being relied upon as key providers of DNA reference samples for identification purposes. Despite the critical importance of reference sample submission, there is limited research exploring how South African communities perceive the collection, use, and governance of their genetic material in these investigations. By examining public perceptions, concerns, and expectations surrounding reference sample submission, this study aims to inform ethically grounded and socially responsive practices that contribute to both the scientific reliability and social legitimacy for forensic identification processes for missing persons investigations.
