Mr Mark Whittaker

Mark Whittaker (MSc) is Research Manager for Sites & Systems at Wellcome, having been appointed in October 2021. In this role, Mark manages Wellcome’s programmes to support evidence-informed decision-making for uptake of medicines against infectious diseases in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs). He also supports Wellcome’s programmes on regulatory systems strengthening and harmonisation, and clinical trials capability strengthening, in LMICs.

Mark originally joined Wellcome in February 2019 as Epidemics Project Officer, to help coordinate Wellcome’s research funding and advocacy initiatives for epidemic preparedness and response. In this post Mark worked on Wellcome’s responses to several Ebola outbreaks in central Africa, as well as the global Covid-19 pandemic response.

Mark’s academic background is in social sciences, with a focus on international development. Before working at Wellcome, Mark worked in various roles relating to funding and management of health research, international development projects, and humanitarian response operations. He has experience working in Ethiopia and South Sudan.
