HATTP’s Annual Scientific Meeting and Health Science Student Seminar garner enthusiastic attention.
HATTP’s local and international faculty, current and prospective fellows, and future HIV-associated TB researchers gathered at UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences on 10th and 11th May 2019 for the Annual Scientific Meeting, followed by a Health Science Students’ Seminar.
A full and varied Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) programme engaged attendees’ attention, offered fellows the opportunity to present their work and plans, and provided an opportunity for the wider IDM community to hear from the visiting faculty. Dr David Haas (Vanderbilt University Medical Center), Dr Richard Chaisson (Johns Hopkins University) and Dr Jonathan Golub (Johns Hopkins University) presented at both the ASM and the Health Science Students’ Seminar the following day.
The annual Health Science Students’ Seminar aims to spark an interest in HIV-associated TB research among students and introduce them to the varied pathways through which young researchers may enter this field. This year, 22 seminar participants were introduced to research ethics, operational and implementation science research, translation of research into policy, drug resistant TB, TB diagnostics, and the immunology of TB. Students enjoyed the opportunity to actively engage with the faculty in small group conversations over lunch, asking pertinent questions about approaches to HIV and TB research in practice, and challenges and enablers in pursuing a research career.
