A symposium jointly organized by the UCT Health Sciences Students’ African Research Society (ARS) and the Fogarty HATTP program was held on Thursday 24th October 2024 at 18h00 as an in-person meeting.
This was the third and final meeting with the African Research Society for 2024. Twenty-seven Fogarty fellows as well as members of the ARS attended the meeting.
The topic of the meeting was: Initiating a Research Career: Advice on getting started
The venue was Frances Ames Room in the Barnard Fuller building at the Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT.
The guest speaker was Professor David Haas from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He holds positions as Professor of Medicine, Professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and Professor of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University. He is a prominent global leader in HIV research.
Tsaiyu Shih, African Research Society Director of Health Sciences, welcomed everyone and Professor Graeme Meintjes, Principal Investigator for HATTP, introduced Professor Haas.
Professor Haas described his entry into research, the colleagues who had influenced his journey and the development of his love for research, in particular the study of HIV. He ended his talk summarising the 11 valuable points of advice for starting a research career.
Following the talk, the Fogarty fellows met in small groups with the medical students to tell them about their research projects and discuss the students’ questions about research.
Everyone then came together to share refreshments and continue networking. Meeting ended at 19h30.
