Vanderbilt University Medical Centre Visit
Vanderbilt University Medical Centre visit
Tafadzwa Chimbetete undertook advanced training at Prof Elizabeth Phillip’s laboratory in the Centre for Drug Safety and Infection, Vanderbilt University Medical Centre (January-July 2025). His visit focused on cutting-edge techniques in Visium HD spatial transcriptomics and single-cell RNA sequencing where he gained hands-on experience spanning the entire workflow from sample preparation through to data analysis, as well as exposure to functional assays that he plans to implement in the UCT laboratory. These approaches were applied to peripheral blood and site-of-disease skin biopsies and blister fluid samples from patients with severe cutaneous adverse reactions (DRESS & SJS/TEN), with the aim to investigate disease immunopathology in the context of HIV-TB coinfection.
Beyond the laboratory, Tafadzwa participated in the AAAAI / WAO Congress in San Diego, where he presented his research, engaged in constructive scientific dialogue, and connected with leading international experts in allergy and immunology. The combination of technical training and professional networking marked a significant milestone in his research career and further strengthened his commitment to advancing research in drug hypersensitivity. Tafadzwa expresses deep gratitude to Prof Philips and her team for their mentorship and support, as well as to the NIH Fogarty HATTP program, whose financial assistance made the training possible.
