The FHS Writing Lab is a research space as much as a teaching one. We treat writing as a social and identity practice, and our scholarship sits at the intersection of academic literacies, writer identity, multimodal pedagogy, research and researcher development (supervision writing pedagogies), and health sciences education. Our research is not at a distance, what we learn in these areas shapes how we work with writers and researchers every day.

Our areas of research, and some of the questions we explore:
Academic literacies & postgraduate writing How undergraduate students develop their writing practices; how postgraduate writers develop authority and voice within their disciplines, understood as social and identity practices.
Multimodal pedagogy & biomedical visualisation How meaning is made across visual and verbal modes in health sciences teaching and learning.
Professional learning & writing centre practice Writing tutor/consultant training, reflective practice, and the work of building and sustaining reading and writing acquisition in South African higher education.
