The Writing Lab is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 – 18:00.
Before you can make an appointment you will need to register online. Once you have registered an account, login using those details and select the Health Sciences Writing Lab.
Select any available (white) time slots on the schedule and make an appointment with any consultant.
We offer BOTH face-to-face and online consultations. Our face-to-face consultations take place at the Writing Lab located in the Old Main Building, E Floor, Room 52-47, Groote Schuur Hospital. We now also offer face-to-face consultations at our Library venue at the Bongani Mayosi Library at UCT FHS Campus.
We only offer online consultations for our distance-based postgraduate students. You may choose to select our online platform (offers audio, video, and text-based options) or MS Teams (you will receive a link from your writing consultant via email). Please select your preferences appropriately.
As a guide: for a task analysis session and for documents less than 7 pages, book a 30-60-minute consultation.
For more than 7 pages, book a 2-hour consultation. Your consultant will spend the first hour reading your document. You will need to log on to the online consultation platform at the start of the second hour.
The maximum document length that we read is 15 pages. Consider booking multiple appointments for more than 15 pages - chat to your consultant about planning your writing journey together.
It is preferable that you upload your document to the WL system by 9:00 on the day of your appointment and/or provide enough context to prepare the consultant for your session. Please be advise that uploding the document does not mean that the consultant will read your document (except for 2 hour sessions where the first hour is dedicated to reading).
In the area? Come say hello! We also have writing spaces available if you need a quiet space. Follow the directions below to find us or watch our walk-through videos
