The project is structured around four interconnected work packages (WPs), each addressing a key question about the systems shaping alcohol use and harm. Together, they explore policy and regulatory environments, patterns of alcohol access and consumption, and the resulting health and economic impacts. Drawing on methods such as policy analysis, mapping, interviews, surveys, and modelling, the project generates evidence to inform more effective alcohol policies and harm reduction strategies.
1. Political Economy
What characterises the political, economic, and regulatory context of harmful alcohol use in SA and Botswana, including strategies by industry to further their interests?
2. Alcohol Acquisition & Consumption
What community-level and cultural factors influence alcohol acquisition/consumption?
3. Assess Impacts
How do drivers impact drinking patterns/behaviours, health outcomes, and the alcohol economy?
4. Evidence to Action
How can we harness community and policymaker voices to advocate for reduced alcohol harm and influence policy/interventions?
