A multi-disciplinary research initiative understanding the alcohol environment to reduce harm
The challenge
Harmful alcohol use is a major public health challenge and contributes significantly to injury, disease, violence, and social and economic harm in Southern Africa. These harms are shaped not only by individual behaviour, but also by policy, industry practices, availability, affordability, marketing, and community norms. Stronger, evidence-based solutions are needed.
Who we are
CHASE-SA is a five-year multidisciplinary research collaboration led by the University of Cape Town and the South African Medical Research Council. We work with academic and civil society partners to study the factors driving harmful alcohol use in South Africa and Botswana and how effective intervention can reduce alcohol-related harm.
Our initiative
CHASE-SA studies the full alcohol environment — from policy and industry influence to community drinking patterns and health impacts. By generating evidence and working with communities and policymakers, we aim to inform effective policies and interventions that reduce alcohol-related harm.
