Master of Science (MSc) in Biomedical Engineering

Requirements: A four-year degree in Engineering or an Honours degree in Mathematical, Physical or Computer Sciences.

Format: The MSc is offered on a full-time basis only. Completion of the degree typically takes two years. We offer an MSc by full dissertation (code: MM054HUB05) with compulsory coursework to be taken during the first year. The coursework is regarded as preparation for the dissertation and does not count towards the degree mark.

The topic for the dissertation is chosen by the student, in consultation with a supervisor. The student will be required to required to provide regular written progress reports and oral presentations.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomedical Engineering

Requirements: Candidates for the PhD (code: MD001HUB05) must satisfy the general requirements of the Faculty of Health Sciences as given in the Faculty of Health Sciences Postgraduate Handbook.

Format: The primary commitment is a thesis based on original research. The PhD is offered on a full-time basis only.

Courses Offered

The courses listed below are offered as part of the Biomedical Engineering programme. Certain courses may not be offered if student numbers are too low, and some courses are not offered every year. Course descriptions and rules for degrees are given in the Faculty of Health Sciences Postgraduate Handbook.

MSc (dissertation only): Students are required to complete the following pre-requisite courses in the first year, in preparation for the dissertation, and in order to be allowed to register for the second year: HUB2025F, HUB4075W, HUB4095F, and chosen by the student in conjunction with their supervisor and the academic coordinator two of the following: HUB4007F, HUB4045F, HUB5031F and HUB6009F. Students may however not receive credit for both HUB5031F and HUB6009F. Additional courses may be taken beyond the minimum requirements. Credit may be granted for equivalent courses completed elsewhere.

PhD: Students may be asked to complete one or more courses as a foundation to their research work.
