Integrating Technology into Teaching and Research
<>Inspired by the potential to build meaningful collaborative connections and the value to learn from each other, we have created collective sharing opportunities to help us open up transdisciplinary boundaries. Often, we just don’t know what is happening in other departments and units, and their work can be greatly beneficial to our’s.
Technology Talks
The global success of TED Talks inspired us to develop similar short, faculty-related, information sharing outputs that we’ve called Teaching and Educating with Technology (TET) Talks. Before the COVID pandemic hit us, we hosted monthly lunchtime sessions inviting Faculty members to bring short narratives and presentations that were “ideas worth sharing”. This initiative offered educators an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and foster constructive connections.
The TET Talk Forum offers an opportunity for both educators and students to take 5- 10 mins to share innovative ideas or experiences, talk about a new initiative, find out what resources are available or just bounce ideas off others.

| Lori Lake | Teaching with technology to develop advocates for child health | Drawing on lessons learned from the PG Diploma in Community and General Paediatrics, this presentation explores how our child rights and advocacy course takes advantage of Vula. How the affordances of a blended learning platform facilitate participation and shared learning across districts, and to ground children’s rights in professional practice. |
| Lynelle Govender & Maria Jose | Device Drive | After surveying the 2nd year MBChB class, we discovered that there were a small number of students who did not have a laptop; and found it detrimental to their learning. We will share the challenges and successes which we have experienced thus far in our project, which may prove helpful to others. Furthermore, we believe that other staff members may have valuable insight to share with us – specifically with regards to growing this project into a sustainable initiative. |

Show & Tell Faculty Sessions
Our “Show and Tell” sessions were a regular feature in the Faculty programme opening up a platform for teaching staff to showcase their work with students whether in their classrooms, a new technology, innovative use of old technologies, or other interesting events emerging in their pedagogical practices or research.

- Helen Buchanan – Creating an online educational resource for undergraduate students: the journey and lessons learned. This presentation describes the rationale for creating an online learning resource for 2nd year occupational therapy students. The process of creating and publishing the resource was shared, along with the challenges and highlights. Further plans to complete and evaluate the resource were presented.
- Juan Klopper – Teaching at scale. The positives and negatives around the development of large, open online courses at a University in a developing country.
- Clive Gray – Immunopaedia: Advancing global immunology on-line. There appeared to be a niche in training SA registrars in immunology through clinical case studies. Although the initial focus was on HIV and paediatric immunology, over the years we have branched out to all areas of immunology and now cover both basic and clinical immunology.
- Phinda & Vela Njisane – Four Minute Medicine for your edutainment. Four Minute Medicine hopes to complement the current formal medical curriculum as a free online educational platform. It aims to make medical content more palatable and digestible, by presenting it through various media.
