Conflict of Interest is an important challenge for generating high-quality, evidence-based health policy and has been recognised by the WHO and other authorities meriting careful management.

On the 16th August, UCT co-hosted a webinar on the topic conflict of interest in health research. A a panel comprising Dr Lindiwe Makubalo (WHO Afro Office), Dr Ahmed Ogwell Ouma (Africa CDC), Dr Paul Ndebele (George Washington University) and Dr Michael Makanga (EDCTP) explored some of the challenges in identifying and managing conflict of interest in health research. The webinar also introduced an international collaborative project to strengthen the capacity of Science Councils and Research Ethics Committees in Sub-Saharan Africa to better identify and manage conflict of interest in research. The project will conduct a regional needs and capacity assessment to inform development of a toolkit and online course to strengthen the independent science base for health policy in the region.
