Taxi operators across South Africa have threatened to fill their vehicles to maximum capacity in the easing of lockdown. However, public transport remains a major potential avenue for transmission of infectious diseases, none more critical than COVID-19. The College of Public Health Medicine released a guidance document in March based on rapid evidence review by its Task Team highlighting measures to limit infection transmission in public transport vehicles, including the recommendation to limit the number of passengers. This statement reminds policy makers of the risks and urges caution in respect to filling taxis to capacity.
