A fit of the vapers – the case against e-cigarettes
E-cigarettes are heavily promoted as a ‘healthy’ alternative to smoking tobacco, as advanced in an article in (Daily Maverick, 14 May 2019) which argued that “On World No Tobacco Day, the WHO should promote vaping.” Not only are e-cigarettes a gateway to smoking, but their apologists make inaccurate claims and attempt to denigrate World Health Organisation research on the issue.
A group of public health researchers and activists, part of the Tobacco Control Advocacy Alliance, respond to these claims highlighting the flaws in industry arguments and illustrating how e-cigarettes are potentially just as dangerous, and therefore require careful regulation.
