Obstetrics Unit

Mowbray Maternity hospital (MMH) is a public sector Specialised Maternity Hospital which provides care maternal and newborn care. It includes an obstetric, neonatal and midwifery service. It is part of the teaching platform of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Department of Paediatrics of the University of Cape Town. It also has valuable teaching and service input from the Department of Anaesthetics of UCT.
This section will refer to the obstetrics component of the hospital.

Brief description

Mowbray Maternity Hospital (MMH) is a level 2 public sector obstetric hospital in Metro West which receives complicated obstetric and neonatal referrals from primary care Midwife Obstetric Units [MOU's], specifically (Gugulethu, Mitchell’s Plain, Hanover Park and Retreat MOU) as well as from False Bay Hospital.

MMH alsol has a low risk antenatal clinic, the Liesbeck Antenatal Clinic [LANC], where patients who live in the immediate catchment area can book for antenatal care.  The following areas fall into the immediate catchment area:  Mowbray, Rosebank, Rondebosch, Rondebosch East, Newlands and Claremont.

MMH provides:

Daily Antenatal Clinics (Monday to Friday)
High Risk Postnatal Care Service
Level 2 Ultrasound Service
Antenatal and Postnatal Inpatient Care
24 hour Emergency Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care which includes Labour Ward and Obstetric Theatre.

Counselling and Support Groups

Kangaroo Mother Care

It also performs clinical outreach and provides in-service training to satellite MOUs with significant input from a team of career medical officers
It is accredited for the Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative [MBFHI], and actively pursues MBFHI principles.
As part of the teaching platform of Department Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UCT it undertakes teaching of undergraduate & postgraduate students; and is participating in several international and national research projects

REFERRAL CRITERIA

Please refer to the Metro West referral criteria document which indicates which clients within Metro West can be cared for at which level of care and how the referral system works with relevant phone numbers.

MOUs may refer woman:

- To a MMH antenatal clinic by phoning OPD 021659 5916

- For Intrapartum & emergency referrals, please speak to the Obstetric registrar on call at 021 659 5545 or 5569

NB. General practitioner & specialist may refer client using the same mechanisms, They need to ensure that the patient is in the catchment area for MMH and also to note that low risk woman should be referred to the MOU which serves their residential area.

All patients need to be referred telephonically
