Students are taught in class on the quadruple burden of disease in South Africa, and the epidemiology of these diseases. These cover common illnesses in adults and in children. In the community, in addition to the home visits and family practitioner practice visits, students have an opportunity to learn about the health needs of their assigned communities through a “Look, Listen, Learn” session where they engage with a wide variety of community residents and representatives to identify priority health needs in the community. Students have opportunities to use the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) guidelines in child primary care clinics; and also receive clinical bedside teaching at a tertiary children’s hospital. These exposures are assesses through a child health portfolio. Students are also taught about behavior change counseling and undergo videotaped consultations with patients in the clinics or FP practices, which are assessed.
