Biostatistics pulls in the numbers
Fogarty HATTP held a well-attended Introduction to Biostatistics course from 24th to 28th June 2019. Twenty University of Cape Town researchers and post-graduates enjoyed the opportunity to interact with four facilitators: Aletta Nonyane (Johns Hopkins University), Olina Ngwenya, Tracy Glass and Isaac Singini (all UCT). The intensive course covered a spectrum of topics from basic to advanced, including variable definition, data summaries, hypothesis testing, regressions, power and sample size calculations, and longitudinal data analysis, among others. Participants were in good spirits and posed challenging and insightful questions during the lectures and practical sessions. The facilitators also addressed current issues in statistics such as the often uncritical emphasis placed on p-values.
HATTP provided this course with a view to supporting the development of Health Science students and medical doctors who have a clear plan to enter HIV-TB research.
