Born and schooled in Durban, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, Dr Yates went on to study medicine at the University of Cape Town. Her long standing interest and fascination with genetics and foetal development led her to Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK where, in 2009, she was appointed as a Consultant in Clinical Genetics and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Genetic Medicine, and as Head of the UK Teratology Information Service (www.UKTIS.org).
Her research interests are in developmental genetics, foetal effects of medicine use in pregnancy and teratogen surveillance. She is currently a board member of the European Network of Teratology Information Services, and chair of the European Medicines Agency's European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (ENCePP) Pregnancy Special Interest Group, and the ENCePP Working Group on Independence and Transparency.
