Prof  Maarten Taal

Biography

Maarten Taal graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School, South Africa, in 1987. After completing his post-graduate training in internal medicine and nephrology at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, he joined the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Physiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, USA under the directorship of Barry M. Brenner, MD. His research focused on mechanisms underlying the progression of chronic kidney disease and earned him a Doctor of Medicine degree.

 

He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom where he was appointed a Consultant Renal Physician at Derby City General Hospital in 2002 and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham in 2011.

He was appointed Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Sciences and Graduate Entry Medicine, University on Nottingham in April 2014.

Dr Majid Twahir

Dr. Majid Twahir has more than 20 years experience in the health industry starting from a junior doctor to hospital leadership.

He currently works for the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi as the Associate Dean, Clinical Affairs and Chief of Staff. His responsibilities including providing oversight on medical governance, ensuring quality, appropriate delivery of medical services and advising the executive on medical matters to achieve safe patient care. As a member of senior leadership, Majid participates in the organization’s strategic planning. He is also the key liaison between hospital services and the educational and research programs of the Medical College.

Majid is currently also an adjunct lecturer in quality, operations and change management at the Strathmore Business School where he teaches several executive programs both medical and non-medical. He was founding advisory council member of Executive Health Management Program of Strathmore Business School and served in this council for two terms.

Majid is currently finalising a Doctorate in Business Administration degree at USIU-A focusing on Strategic Management. His area of study is around the role of hospital quality in driving national health quality.

He is a certified Balanced Scorecard Master Professional and an MBA alumnus of Strathmore Business School. He also holds advanced medical qualifications - Post Fellowship Certificate in Nephrology, Masters of Medicine (Internal Medicine) and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Majid’s previous work experience include being The Hospital Executive Director at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Director of Operations and Utilization management at The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi and the Medical Director at the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa. Majid’s earlier was a lecturer in the department of Medicine at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. Dr. Twahir has also worked as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology in the University of Nairobi.

 

Dr Robert Freercks

Dr Robert Freercks completed his certificate in Nephrology training at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town in 2011.  His research interests include the detection and clinical effects of vascular calcification in CKD patients and completed his MPhil degree in 2012 through research in this field.  He has received several research grants including the Discovery Academic Fellowship Research Grant as well as a Genzyme investigator-initiated research grant.  Since 2012, he is the head of the Livingstone Tertiary Hospital Renal Unit which is a large academic unit based in Port Elizabeth and is an HPCSA-accredited nephrology training unit linked to Groote Schuur. 

 

Dr Phetho Mangena

I am a native of Polokwane. I completed both my undergraduate and postgraduate training at Groote Schuur Hospital/ University of Cape Town. 

I completed my Certificate in Nephrology in August 2016. I conducted research on Hypertension in Adolescents for the purposes of an MPhil under the supervision of Professors Rayner and Ntsekhe  (in progress). On completion of the certification examinations I returned to Polokwane to join the Department of Medicine at Pietersburg Hospital in Limpopo Province, where I am a consultant in General Medicine and Nephrology.

Olugbenga Edward Ayodele

Olugbenga Edward Ayodele obtained the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB;BS) degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1991 and the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in 2002 after completing his postgraduate medical training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. He received the Training Grant by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) which afforded him the opportunity for additional training in Nephrology at the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension, Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) /University of Cape Town (UCT) between March 2007 and March 2008. He was trained in General Nephrology and Renal Transplantation and also underwent a six month course on Research Methodology while at UCT.  He reviewed the data on biopsy-proven lupus nephritis at GSH over a 12 year period and this research work was published in Nephrology 2010;15:482 -490. Since he returned to Nigeria, he has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical training. He serves as a Resource Person in Update Courses by the West African College of Physicians and was appointed as an Examiner to the College in 2014.

He joined Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Nigeria in 2003 as Lecturer I and rose to become Professor of Medicine in 2011. He has co-authored many scholarly articles in national and international journals on hypertension, acute and chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, metabolic syndrome and lupus nephritis. He served as Head, Department Medicine, LAUTECH, between October 1, 2013 and July 31, 2014 and was elected as the Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences on October 1, 2014 for a two year period. He enjoys reading Christian and motivational books and watching football in his spare time. He lives at Osogbo, Nigeria, with his wife and three children. Dr Stella Alagbe

Dr. Stella Chinyelu Alagbe is a graduate of the prestigious University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. She trained under Professor Brian Rayner and Professor Charles Swanepoel  whose relentless supervisions guided Her to complete a Masters of Philosophy certification in Nephrology as a well  as a Certificate in Nephrology (South Africa).

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at UCT utilizes a curriculum that effectively integrates knowledge of Novel research methodologies and Research outcomes. These are then used in formulations of Clinical approaches to patient care in Nephrology. Furthermore, the diversities seen in the geo-ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds of participants in Research protocols and Clinical training, helps greatly in Her current position as a Clinician in the highly heterogeneous, multicultural urban population of Lagos, Nigeria. 

Her journey into this career path in the field of Medicine started from the University of Benin, Benin City Nigeria where she obtained the Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.S). She later continued on this career path by completing a Masters Program in Public Health (MPH) at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Upon completion of this program, Dr. Stella Alagbe joined the team of Clinicians at Life Support Medical Center, a private Nephrology Center in Lagos. This is where her interest in the field of Nephrology was kindled. She later enrolled in the Post graduate program in Internal medicine and Nephrology at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos - thus leading to her graduation as a Fellow of West African College of Physicians.

Currently, Dr. Stella Alagbe is a Licensed Consultant Nephrologist with the Nigerian Medical Council. She is the Head of Nephrology and Dialysis Unit at the General Hospital in Marina Lagos, Nigeria.
