Dr Sakeena Ebrahim

What is your current appointment in the Department of Medicine?

I am currently employed as a clinical lecturer and consultant in the Department of Medicine. I am also the co-convenor for the sixth-year undergraduate medicine course and site convenor for the students placed at Mitchells Plain Hospital for their medicine block.

Is your chosen field of specialization as a result of long-term strategy or happy circumstance?

Internal Medicine has always been my first choice and all my career choices were chosen to attain that goal. My specific teaching role is something that I grew into much later.

Could you explore how much your professional life has changed since COVID-19? Despite the devastation to lives and livelihoods, have we learnt some lessons that have moved us forward as a society?

COVID 19 has been a steep learning curve with lots of new information being made available on an almost daily basis. It was often difficult to keep up with this. To a certain degree it also broke down the hierarchical structure within medicine, as it was ‘’all hands on deck’’ so to speak.

What would you tell you of 15 years ago, if there was the opportunity?

‘’There’s a pandemic coming. Humans must prevent it or prepare for it’’ Jokes aside, we spend a lot of time pursuing this career, I would tell myself to enjoy the journey.
