Our biennial Physicians Conference was held at the Graduate School of Business in Cape Town from Friday the 2nd of February to Sunday the 4th of February 2024. This was preceded by ‘Meet the Experts’ workshops at Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT Medical School on Thursday the 1st of February. For the second time, this meeting was a collaborative effort between the Departments of Medicine at the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

Overall, the conference was a resounding success with more than 170 registered delegates. The opening eponymous Frank Forman lecture was delivered by Prof Graeme Meintjes who provided an overview of TB and HIV in hospitalised patients. This was followed by Prof Mark Engel who discussed Rheumatic Heart Disease in Africa, and the efforts to contain this by focusing on Streptococcal infection.

Over the 3 days that followed a myriad of important general medical topics covering all medical specialities were addressed by key opinion leaders from both the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Several interactive quizzes were included in the program. The feedback from delegates was extremely positive and commended the quality of these lectures and the content of the conference in general. The conference closed with a thought-provoking ethics lecture delivered by Prof Chris Scott highlighting the complexities of medical practice in financially constrained environments.

The next Physicians Conference will be held in 2026 and using feedback from our delegates will aim to build on the success of this conference.
