The SDGs Africa Summit hosted by UCT is a collaborative event for engagement, innovation, and actionable outputs to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. This year, postgraduate students were encouraged to submit 3-minute videos as part of the summit’s ‘Emerging Thought Leaders’ initiative.

UCT recognizes that young African researchers have a crucial role to play in achieving SDGs, and the goal of these videos was to showcase (to a non-expert audience) how ongoing postgraduate research will contribute to #TheAfricaWeWant.  Two of our MSc (Med) students, Titus Mashilo and Sarah Lampert, submitted brief videos highlighting how their projects on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Inherited Metabolic Disorders, can improve the outcomes of patients with these conditions, and ultimately contribute to improving the overall health and wellbeing of people in Africa. Sarah’s video was one of 32 videos selected to be showcased on the online summit platform.
