SATVI scholar Dr Munyaradzi Musvosvi awarded prestigious scholarship from the Crick Africa Network
The Crick Africa Network has awarded Dr Munyaradzi Musvosvi a prestigious fellowship through the African Career Acceleration Fellowship.
Dr Musvosvi is one of 8 leading African researchers to be awarded training fellowships from the Crick Africa network.
This four-year fellowship will support Dr Musvosvi’s research efforts to develop an innovative, automated method for processing blood samples to measure a promising T cell-based TB biomarker.
This work will be performed in collaboration with researchers at the Francis Crick Institute, London, UK. The biomarker that is the focus of this fellowship is based on the level of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb)-specific T cell activation, measured in blood. Researchers have consistently shown that persons with TB have a higher level of M.tb-specific T cell activation compared to persons without TB, which allows this test to identify those with TB, or who are at risk of TB.
In addition to the funding support, Dr Musvosvi will also receive mentorship and guidance on how to translate this candidate biomarker into a diagnostic test. Dr Musvosvi’s ultimate objective is to develop a tool that will reduce the global burden of tuberculosis. We look forward to seeing the impact of Dr Musvosvi’s work and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.
