We are proud to see the lessons from many years of practice shared in this new eBook. It was a pleasure working with Cecily M. Betz who did a beautiful job editing this collection of successful practice models in paediatrics from around the world. The chapter contributed by Natasha North and Minette Coetzee describes the Breatheasy Programme pioneered by Sr Jane Booth at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. This programme makes it possible for children with tracheostomies in South Africa to be cared for at home with their families. In the chapter, Natasha and Minette also present the Care Through Family model, a research based approach to strengthening partnerships between nurses and family caregivers.

A Capability Maturity Model (CMM) describes a step-wise progressing of a process, from inception to full process maturity. With a growing number of countries establishing new children’s nursing programmes, this CMM sets out what process maturity looks like in relation to education, clinical and regulatory systems, human resources for health systems, and requirements related to overall stakeholder collaboration.
Stakeholders can use the model as a map to identify where they are in the process, and establish the resources and actions needed to make further progress.

This book presents a compelling case for putting care at the centre of health care. It powerfully makes the case for strong therapeutic relationships as a way to create reciprocity in health care relationships – that interacting thoughtfully with patients and building our capacity to do so, greatly reduces clinical burnout, enhances patient care, patient safety and patient outcomes. This book outlines first principals for caring relationships and then provides a blueprint for building intentional therapeutic relationships which must be grounded in a culture of wellness with a strong emphasis on self-care.
