Best publication award - Lwanda Buthelezi
The Division of Immunology is pleased to announce that Lwanda Buthelezi and her supervisor Professor Reto Guler received an award for best publication in the category: Basic Lab Sciences Postgraduate award. The award ceremony took place at the FHS Research Strategy meeting hosted by the Dean, on the 17 October at the Neuroscience Centre. We would like to congratulate and commend them for their excellent work and are proud to share their success and work with the UCT community.
The paper is titled: Antisense Therapy for Infectious Diseases by Lwanda Abonga Buthelezi, Shandre Pillay, Noxolo Nokukhanya Ntuli, Lorna Gcanga and Reto Guler.
Biography of Lwanda Buthelezi
Lwanda Abonga Buthelezi is originally from Stanger in KwaZulu-Natal. She recently graduated with her MSc in Clinical Sciences and Immunology with distinction in September 2024, with her thesis titled “Host-directed targeting of IFN-γ induced long non-coding RNA-445 during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection”. She was supervised by Professor Reto Guler for both her honours and masters degrees in the Cytokines and Diseases Lab. Lwanda currently works as a Scientific Officer at the Cellular Immunology Platform (Medical Virology) in Prof. Wendy Burgers Lab. She enjoys research and plans to further her academic career in the near future.
