The Division of Immunology (DOI) and the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) will again host 93 high school students from poor communities for a day of outreach. The learners will be treated to lectures, lunch, practicals and a Heart of Cape Town Museum visit on 1st November 2019.

Outreach Day 2018

Five high schools (Heathfield, Lavender Hill, Uxolo, Masiyile and Sinenjongo) will be bussed to the University of Cape Town where they will learn about HIV, Immunology, Listeria, TB and more in a lecture series.

The learners will be treated to delicious King Pie combo meals which is a pie, chips and drink. King Pie generously sponsored 120 meals for the event.

The high school students will then head to the laboratories for some practicals to learn about microbial growth. Envirochem have kindly sponsored 120 bottles of their hand sanitiser that will be used in the practicals and gifted to the students. The Envirochem’s hand sanitiser kills TB and Listeria.

The learners will then learn about Christiaan Barnard and heart surgery at The Heart of Cape Town Museum. The museum have generously reduced the price of their admission tickets and will provide a tour.

This year the high school learners will be given a T-shirt to remember the day by. The T-shirt will include details of the day and the logos of the sponsors. 120 t-shirts have been sponsored by the Rabie Property Group, we’re sure the students will wear them with pride.

The students will then say a fond farewell as they are bussed back to their schools. The IDM has generously sponsored funds to allow for transport, museum tickets and lab consumables.

The DOI Outreach team would like to thank all the sponsors for the day; IDM, King Pie, Envirochem, the Heart of Cape Town Museum and Rabie Property Group.
