Dr Mohlopheni Marakalala Awarded

Congratulations to Dr Mohlopheni Marakalala, Senior Lecturer and a Group Leader in the Division of Immunology. Dr Marakalala has been awarded the NRF Research Excellence Award for Early Career/Emerging Researchers for outstanding research excellence by current Thuthuka grant holders. Dr Marakalala is also a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow and Associate Member of the IDM.

Dr Marakalala obtained his PhD in Chemical Pathology (UCT), receiving the Bronte Stewart award for the most meritorious thesis submitted by a doctoral student in 2008. Between 2009 and 2012, he was a Sydney Brenner Postdoctoral Fellow working with Gordon Brown on innate immunology of TB and fungal infections. He is also a 2015/2016 Next Einstein Fellow, and was also honoured as a Young Scientist at the 2015 World Economic Forum new champions meeting.
