HATTP fellows forge ahead despite the challenges of 2020
Despite the many and varied challenges of 2020, the fellows of the Fogarty HIV-associated Tuberculosis Training Program have maintained their research momentum. The fellows presented their work during the Fogarty HATTP Annual Scientific Meeting held via Zoom on the 11th of December 2020.
Professor Graeme Meintjes kicked off the meeting with an overview of HATTP, describing the original aims and noting that of the projected total of 15 fellowships, 12 have already been awarded: two postdoctoral fellowships, 8 PhD fellowships and 2 Masters scholarships.
The fellows were invited to share a little personal vignette before beginning their presentations, which revealed that HATTP could field a reasonable cross-national Olympic team, with a tennis player, rower, runners, and a rock climber among their number. The fellows and other meeting attendees originally hail from all over South Africa, Zimbabwe and the United States of America.

Professor Meintjes wrapped up the meeting with the outlook for 2021, which includes the award of three additional postdoctoral fellowships, and continuing support for the current cohort. However, HATTP may be transitioning to online courses rather than in-person courses for the foreseeable future.
