On 10 April 2019, we held a very successful RCR training session. The session was attended by 11 trainees, including Zinhle Cindi, who is currently at Vanderbilt University undertaking pharmacogenomics training, via Skype. The session was facilitated by Graeme Meintjes, Phumla Sinxadi and Jonny Peter. The 2-hour discussion session was focussed  on the book “On Being a Scientist” (https://www.nap.edu/catalog/12192/on-being-a-scientist-a-guide-to-responsible-conduct-in). Each trainee presented a summary of one chapter followed by a group discussion. Topics covered included Treatment of Data, Authorship and Allocation of Credit, Research Ethics and Research Misconduct. Key themes to emerge during the discussion were the importance of integrity and trust in research, the importance of seeking advice from others, the need to agree terms of engagement in collaborations from early on and that there is not always a single correct answer in challenging situations but its important to remember the key principles underlying RCR when facing such challenging situations.
