Dr Shameemah Abrahams is a Lecturer in the Division of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Department of Pathology. She is a Molecular Biologist by training with a PhD in Exercise Science from the University of Cape Town, UCT (2017).  Shameemah majored in Biochemistry and Physiology for her undergraduate at UCT (2008-2010). During her Postdoctoral fellowship at Stellenbosch University, she used cellular lines to uncover the therapeutic effects of turmeric on mitochondrial function in the movement disorder, Parkinson’s disease.
Dr Abrahams currently convenes the Applied Forensics course in the MPhil Biomedical Forensic Science programme, as well as heads the Medico-legal Death Investigation, Forensic Trauma, and Forensic Toxicology modules within the recently introduced BMedSc (Honours): Biomedical Forensic Science programme.
She has, so far, published 20 scientific articles in international and local peer-reviewed journals and presented her research at 12 academic conferences. Her research interests include neurodegeneration, brain trauma and the underlying molecular pathways.
