Inspiring young women through science engagement in Biomedical Forensic Science laboratory

On 18 February 2020, the Molecular Forensics Research Group hosted thirteen Grade 12 biology students from St Cyprians School.  After learning about DNA in their school syllabus, the girls were eager to learn about DNA-based procedures that are performed in a forensic setting. To spark their interest, we showed them how touch DNA as well as buccal swabs are collected and then demonstrated how DNA is extracted and quantified. To provide insight into crime scene investigation, the presumptive testing of urine was also demonstrated. We hope to have enlightened these young ladies and wish them all the best for their journey ahead!
