On the 2^nd of September 2015, the Departments of Clinical Laboratory Science (now known as the Department of Pathology) and Human Biology, came together in order for students to present any research they have undertaken, or been part of. All oral presentations took place within the main Lecture Theatre in the New Learning Centre, with the poster presentations taking place within the foyer.

The day was kicked off by Prof Meissner, the recently appointed Director of Postgraduate Studies. He presented interesting statistics regarding post-graduate studies, how the University of Cape Town compares to other universities around the world, and the importance of research occurring at this level. Throughout the day a vast array of topics was discussed, with the majority of presentations involving research that was molecular in nature.

Two students from the Division of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, both undertaking the M.Phil Biomedical Forensic Science course, presented on the day. Courtnee Clark gave an oral presentation on her current research in which a retrospective study of blunt force trauma in Cape Town was conducted. Petra Schwab’s presentation detailed her retrospective study in which fire related fatalities in Cape Town were investigated. Petra also had a poster presentation on an unusual case report of a death due to lightning. Here is what the two students had to say about the Research Day:

“I think the research day provided a good platform for students to practice their presentation skills and to discuss their topics with attendees. The day also allowed for attending academics to gain insight into current research taking place at the University, which is essential for collaboration and the stimulation of new research topics. “The Health Sciences Post Graduate Research Day is an excellent opportunity for students to get insight into the work of their colleagues in different departments. It allows for the sharing of ideas and opens up possibilities for collaboration. It is interesting and exciting to see and hear what is being investigated by fellow students. In the future, I believe it would be beneficial to have more input from the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Division to even out the contribution of ideas, as well as expanding to other relevant Divisions.” – Courtnee Clark

Thank you to the organizers for pulling together a very insightful and intellectually motivating day, and for providing students with this opportunity.  The students were appreciative of the support and input from those who took the time to attend the presentations.
