Farewell Dr Maistry
On the 25th of July 2016, the Division bade a fond farewell to Dr Sairita Maistry, aka Sascha. Dr Maistry joined the Division in September 2007 as a Forensic Pathology registrar. At the time she held a BSc, BSc Hons (Medical Virology), and an MBChB degree from Medunsa (now Sefako Makgatho University). Whilst working in the Department, she attained a Diploma in Forensic Medicine and a Fellowship of the College of Forensic Pathologists. Her MMed thesis was entitled “A retrospective analysis of deaths in the Table Mountain National Park (2000 to 2011), and supervised by Dr L Liebenberg. Not one to rest on her laurels, she began a PhD project to look into possible genetic markers of suicide. She has published articles on bite mark analysis and Pneumocystis jiroveci infection of the external auditory canal. She was an enthusiastic lecturer to the undergraduate students, and with a passion for research, and she supervised a number of Masters of Biomedical Forensic Sciences within the Department. She is currently working as a Forensic Pathology Specialist in Glebe, New South Wales, Australia. We miss her, and wish her all the best!
