Overview

The Centre for Medical Mycology (CMM) in AFRICA is a research and training unit focusing on human fungal infections (medical mycology) affecting people living in Africa. Our vision is to advance knowledge of fungal pathogenesis, host immunity and disease phenotypes, and develop evidence-based strategies for management (prevention, diagnosis and treatment), across the African continent.

The major burden of serious invasive fungal infection is borne by low- or middle-income countries, particularly in Africa, where the invasive fungal infection mortality rate is around 50%. The Centre for Medical Mycology (CMM) in AFRICA unit was established in 2017 by the University of Cape Town and the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM), University of Exeter and is a research and training hub focusing on human fungal infections affecting the African continent.

Our objective is to advance medical mycology research in Africa through rigorous laboratory work, funded training courses for clinicians and early-career scientists in LMICs and strong partnerships with collaborating institutions.
We are committed to:

  • Being the continental hub for state-of-the-art research and training in medical mycology.
  • Disseminating of knowledge on fungal diagnostics and therapeutics amongst health care workers.
  • Increasing public awareness about the impact of human fungal infections in Africa.
