In memoriam: Professor Bongani Mayosi

Prof. Mayosi was appointed head of the Department of Medicine at UCT in 2006, and became Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2016.
UCT’s Council established an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding Prof. Mayosi’s tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, the report of which can be read here. The report raises several issues that require reflection and then change. Scientific advance and learning are best achieved by a research culture that embraces inclusivity and in which people feel supported.
Prof. Mayosi was committed to fostering collaborative research and translating research findings into effective policy and practice to improve health; we will honour his memory by upholding his commitment through our work.
"CIDRI-Africa remembers Prof. Bongani Mayosi with an abiding sense of loss and with enduring affection. His thoughtfulness and scientific vision continue to impact the members of our Centre. Our thoughts remain with his family, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched.”—CIDRI-Africa Director Prof. Robert J Wilkinson.
Prof. Mayosi’s research
Prof. Mayosi’s research activities were centred on heart diseases prevalent in developing countries, including the genetic epidemiology of heart disease, treatment of tuberculous pericarditis, and prevention of rheumatic fever. He initiated the Investigation of the Management of Pericarditis (IMPI) Registry in 2003 as a pan-African network of collaborators investigating ways of reducing the high mortality that is associated with tuberculous pericarditis. He also established the Global Rheumatic Heart Disease Registry (the REMEDY study), and the pan-African Cardiomyopathy and Myocarditis Registry Programme (IMHOTEP).
