How do we build and grow Communities of Practice?
This was the focus of the first Children’s Nursing Educator Forum of 2022. At this meeting on March 30th 2022, nursing educators from across the continent were encouraged to consider what one needs to create a Community of Practice.
Key note speaker, Emeritus Professor Marian Jacobs, has been a community of practice builder since 1989. She shared some pearls on how to establish a community of practice which she defined as “a group of people who share a concern or passion of what they do, and learn how to do it better while interacting regularly”.
Lessons I learnt:
- The importance of team work to reach outcomes quicker
- Looking at the ultimate goal motivates participants to reach consensus
- Communities that eat together stay together, share recipes and help each other in selfcare (i.e. in looking after oneself)
- Build trust to enable opportunities to ask difficult questions
