During her time as a registrar in the division, Justine most enjoyed exploring the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of disease both theoretically, and through practical experimentation and innovation. She also thrived on teaching, whether it be undergraduates, registrars or colleagues from other disciplines. The challenges involved in qualifying as a pathologist were sometimes exciting and sometimes daunting, so it was with great relief that Justine passed her final exams and her MMed with distinction in 2020.

In 2021, Justine will be joining the team of Dr. David Sacks, Senior Investigator and Chief of Clinical Chemistry, Department of Laboratory Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Research in the Sacks laboratory focuses on intracellular signal transduction, while Dr. Sacks’ clinical focus is in diabetes mellitus. Other expert researchers in the group focus on areas such as lipidology and metabolism, and mass spectrometry. This two-year fellowship will be an opportunity for Justine to conduct research in a variety of biochemical, molecular and technical topics, and to broaden and hone her capabilities in laboratory medicine at one of the leading medical research institutes in the world.
