Atherosclerosis gel

Speaker at International Symposium on Atherosclerosis on Dysbetalipoproteinaemia:  A Disease of Lipoprotein Remnants and High Cardiovascular Risk.

Prof David Marais delivered a review of this inherited disorder of lipoprotein metabolism that can be diagnosed relatively inexpensively by an in-house electrophoresis technique  when plasma triglycerides and cholesterol are increased. The genetic work-up has revealed that our region has a high proportion of an unusual genetic cause. The accompanying picture shows the lipoproteins in the gel. The remnants are seen as a larger and more extensive range of lipoproteins compared with the sharply defined large and small LDL which are the dominant lipoproteins usually associated with atherosclerosis.
