Collaboration with World Health Organization presented at CROI2024: Simplifying Dosing by Harmonizing Weight-Band-Based Dosing Across Therapeutic Areas in Children
On March 5th, Hylke presented his poster with the title Simplifying Dosing by Harmonizing Weight-Band-Based Dosing Across Therapeutic Areas in Children, at CROI (Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections) in Denver.

In the context of a public health approach, dosing medication for children often involves recommendations in weight increments known as weight bands. For example, 1 tablet for children weighing between 3 to 6 kg and 2 tablets for those weighing between 6 to 10 kg, etc. until they reach the adult-recommended dose. However, different diseases, such as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, use different weight bands for paediatric treatment. This means that if children are treated for multiple diseases, a clinician has to keep in mind multiple dosing instructions.
In collaboration with the World Health Organization's (WHO) network, the Global Accelerator for Paediatric Formulations (GAP-f), their project brought together clinical and pharmacology experts alongside multiple WHO technical departments, with the goal of simplifying dosing for children using a weight banding system harmonized across disease areas.
