Why a career in pharmacometrics?

The use of modelling and simulation applications to aid drug discovery and development continues to grow rapidly. Because the discipline of pharmacometrics lends itself to collaborations with diverse fields including clinical pharmacology, statistics, and biomedical sciences. Pharmacometricians are increasingly playing a vital role in facilitating decisions at all levels of drug development. The demand for scientists with this skillset continues to grow substantially and is widely desirable in industry, academia, and research consultancies. For example, regulatory agencies, including the USA’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) now require modelling analyses to be included in regulatory dossiers. The FDA itself now employs a large group of in-house pharmacometrician reviewers in their Division of Pharmacometrics.

Are you looking for a PhD program in pharmacometrics?

Are you new to pharmacometrics, but it sounds like a research field you are interested in?

Although the availability of positions is unpredictable, as they depend on ongoing projects and sustainable funding, we generally have 1 or 2 official openings every year, which we announce here and on mailing lists such as NMUsers, PharmPK, or PMX Africa. If we do not have any current vacancies (see end of this page), we still welcome spontaneous applications from qualified personnel (e.g., those with a master’s degree in pharmacometrics, applied mathematics, engineering, (bio)statistics, pharmacy/pharmaceutical sciences, or a closely related discipline) with a demonstrated high competence in key skills such as mathematics/statistics and computer programming/data handling. If you wish to apply for a position, please fill out the form below and email us your CV and a half-page motivation letter explaining why you’re interested in joining our group and what makes you the ideal candidate for the position. Please note that, because of limited supervisory capabilities, we tend to be extremely selective.

Do you already have a PhD, and you want to work in pharmacometrics?

We encourage year-round applications for post-doctoral fellowships in the field of pharmacometrics. We seek researchers with a PhD in pharmacometrics, applied mathematics, engineering, (bio)statistics, pharmacy/pharmaceutical sciences (or a closely related discipline) with demonstrated competence in application of model-informed drug development (MIDD) methodologies. We also expect prospective post-doctoral fellows to support supervision of doctoral candidates. Please fill out the form in the link below and email us your CV and a short letter describing who you are and what makes you interested in joining our group.

Learn about pharmacometrics

Are you new to pharmacometrics, but it sounds like a research field you are interested in?

The UCT pharmacometrics group leads a training program that is aimed at developing pharmacometrics skills in Africa through online resources and face-to-face workshops. The program started within a collaboration with Novartis Pharma, and it is now under the umbrella of Pharmacometrics Africa, one of the many initiatives supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

For more info, and to sign up to the mailing list to receive updates about learning opportunities, please consult the Pharmacometrics Africa page here: https://www.pmxafrica.org/
