A number of community-based research projects and programme reviews are currently in various stages of completion.  For more information about any of these, please send an email to cehi@uct.ac.za, stating your specific interest or questions abot them.

1. A Western Cape model for improving access to diabetic retinopathy services.

This is a project supported by Orbis through funding from the World Diabetes Foundation. UCT-CEHI provides project management support for the eye clinic (based at Khayelitsha District Hospital) and community-based health promotion, screening and referral services.  Dr Abraham Opare is teh Project manager.

 

2. Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) surveys

The RAAB is a standardised method used to conduct a prevalence survey on blindness and visual impairment in people aged 50 years and above living in the survey area. RAABs provide estimates of the prevalence and causes of avoidable blindness and visual impairment, with particular focus on cataract surgical coverage, outcome after cataract surgery, etc.

RAABs currently ongoing: Southern Province, Zambia (data collection started on 14 November 2022)

RAABs currently in planning stage: Analamanga district, Madagascar, Bandundu region, Democratic Republic of Congo

RAABs completed so far (2022): West Gojam & Bahir Dar, Ethiopia and Copperbelt Province, Zambia

RAABs completed in 2021: Midlands province, Zambia

RAABs completed in 2020: Matiari district, Pakistan 

RAABs completed in 2019: Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe and Mathebeleland South, Zimbabwe (co-trainer)

RAABs completed in 2017: Inhambane Province, Mozambique

RAABs completed in 2016: Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe

 

3. Childhood Blindness Registry pilot project

Several academic research projects are currently underway to build evidence for the development and establishment of a Childhood Blindness Registry pilot project.
