What is the aim of the programme?
The PgDCEH is aimed at providing training in eye care programme management. It is intended for people who wish to be able to plan, coordinate or manage community eye health programmes at national, district or facility level. It does NOT provide a clinical training in ophthalmology.
Who is the programme targeted at?
People working in prevention of blindness programmes in sub-Saharan Africa. These may include national eye care coordinators, district, provincial or national eye care programme managers, & clinical professionals working in eye care programmes (ophthalmologists, ophthalmic medical officers, ophthalmic clinical officers, optometrists, ophthalmic medical assistants, & ophthalmic nurses).
What are the entry requirements for the programme?
The minimum requirements of the PgDCEH include an undergraduate four-year degree or diploma in health sciences, social sciences, or business management, or an equivalent university qualification. Recognition of prior learning is also considered, in line with the University of Cape Town’s policies. Proficiency in English and mathematics, as well as basic computer literacy, is essential. At least two years’ experience working in community eye health is also required.

What is the structure of the programme?
The PgDCEH programme is made up of 4 courses structured as follows:
- Course 1 (Community eye health) comprises 1 week of contact plus 12 weeks of distance study, plus 2 assignments for assessment
- Course 2 (Eye and health systems) comprises 2 weeks of contact plus 6 weeks of distance study, plus 4 assignments.for assessment
- Course 3 (Management) comprises 4.0 weeks of contact plus 8 weeks of distance study, plus 4 integrated assessment assignments
- Course 4 (Implementation) comprises 23.0 weeks of distance study, plus 5 practical assignments and an examination for assessment
