What is the aim of the programme?
The aim of the MSc(CEH) is to enable participants to undertake appropriate clinical and operational research that might inform the planning and management of eye care programmes. It does NOT provide a clinical training in ophthalmology.
Who is the programme intended for?
The MSc(CEH) is intended for people working in prevention of blindness programmes in sub-Saharan Africa. These may include national eye care coordinators, district eye care programme managers, and clinical professionals with interest in community eye health research.
What are the entry requirements for the programme?
The minimum requirements of the programme include an undergraduate four-year degree in health sciences, social sciences, or an equivalent university qualification. Recognition of prior learning is also considered, in line with the University of Cape Town’s policies. Proficiency in English and mathematics, as well as basic computer literacy is essential. At least two years’ experience working in community eye health is also required.
What is the duration and what are the dates?
Minimum of 18 months
Aspirant candidates of the MScCEH can apply anytime of the year. There are only a few places avalaiable in any particular academic year.
What is the structure of the programme?
The programme is available in MAJOR DISSERTATION mode only, but a MINOR DISSERTATION plus coursework version may be available soon. Candidates should provide proof of successfully completing two of the following master-level courses: Community eye health, Project management essentials and Advocacy and Health Promotion. Candidates will be assisted to develop skills in statistics, epidemiology, literature review and research methodology, and are required to conduct research leading to development of a dissertation of up to 80 000 words.
