Below is a list of some projects underway at VACFA:
Vaccination strategies against pertussis- a modelling study: Using mathematical modelling techniques, this study is exploring the impacts of different vaccination strategies as well as a combination of the vaccination strategies on the epidemiology of pertussis in low- and middle-income countries. A model specific to South Africa will be developed and tested.
Immune response to pertussis after vaccination with a Tdap-IPV booster vaccine in children in the Republic of South Africa: Effect of homologous and heterologous pertussis vaccination priming background. The study is a Sanofi Pasteur-sponsored, phase IV, open-label, vaccine intervention trial, which is being conducted in Cape Town, South Africa. The primary intent of this study is to describe the immune response to booster pertussis vaccination among South African children who completed the primary series of pertussis vaccination during infancy according to the national Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) schedule of South Africa.
Comparative effectiveness of the Danish and Russian BCG vaccine strains in the Western Cape Province of South Africa: a population-based retrospective cohort study. This study aims to compare the rates of tuberculosis (TB) in <5 years old children vaccinated with BCG Danish and Russian strains at birth in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. To address this aim, we will collect existing data (2013 to 2022) from hospital records, electronic TB databases, immunization records and Statistics South Africa.
