Research interests
I joined UCT as the director of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine in January 2011. My research interests are in areas of mycobacterial physiology and metabolism of particular relevance to TB drug resistance and drug discovery. I launched the Molecular Biology Unit at the South African Institute for Medical Research when I returned to South Africa in 1989. I subsequently established and led the Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit, jointly funded by the South African Medical Research Council, the National Health Laboratory Service and Wits University from 2000-2010 and also served as the co-director of the Centre of Excellence for the Biomedical TB Research, jointly funded by the Department of Science and Technology and National Research Foundation from 2004-2010. In addition to my role as institute director, I also serve as head of the UCT node of the partnership with Wits and Stellenbosch in the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB research and director of the Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit, now based at UCT.
