The division of Medical Microbiology performs cutting-edge, internationally competitive research, using the most advanced systems. The division utilizes Next Generation Sequencing Technology in most of its microbial research to describe bacterial genetics in the epidemiology and virulence of outbreaks, the characterisation of numerous human microbiomes, include breast milk, stool, nasopharyngeal, and resistome analyses.  The MiSeq Sequencing Platform is versatile, allowing for targeted resequencing, metagenomics, small genome sequencing, and targeted gene expression profiling, offering up to 15 Gb of output with 25 million sequencing reads and 2 × 300 bp read lengths.

The Division of Medical Microbiology also houses an advanced Anaerobic Culture system.  The Concept 1000 Dual Chamber Anaerobic Workstation allows for dual, independently controlled chambers, with 1000 x 90mm plate capacity, Two Single Plate Entry Systems, and Two Removable fronts. This system is utilized for functional analyses of anaerobic bacterial growth, metabolism, and microbe-microbe and host-microbe interactions.
