Fogarty HIV-Associated TB Training Program (HATTP) Postdoctoral Fellowship in HIV-associated Tuberculosis

The Fogarty HIV-associated Tuberculosis Training Program was established at the University of Cape Town in 2017 in partnership with Johns Hopkins University and Vanderbilt University in the US and aims to develop the next generation of research leaders in the field of HIV-associated TB at UCT. The Program is funded by a second 5-year grant from the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health. It will strengthen UCT’s capacity to address knowledge gaps in this field and tackle new scientific questions as the epidemiology and treatment of HIV and TB evolve. The six focus areas prioritized for training are: Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Advanced Epidemiology and Modelling; Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacogenomics; Immunopathogenesis; HIV-TB Drug Hypersensitivity Reactions and Clinical epidemiology and immunology research of the interaction between HIV and COVID-19.

We are now advertising a HATTP Postdoctoral fellowship opportunity:

Conditions of Award:

1. Successful candidates will be required to register for full time Postdoctoral study at the University of Cape Town starting in February or March 2025.
2. Motivation for a later start date due to the late approval of the thesis, will be considered but the start date must be no later than 30 April 2025.
3. This is an academic training position and your role will be to undertake postdoctoral research at UCT.
4. The research undertaken must be related to HIV-associated TB
5. A UCT-based supervisor (as stated in the application form) is required to support the fellow in the proposed research project
6. Candidates should be within 5 years of graduating with a PhD and should not have held prior permanent professional academic positions
7. Applicants must provide official documentation that the PhD thesis has been examined and approved.
8. The value of the fellowship is R543 000 per annum (as per University of Cape Town SARS limit in 2024)
9. Project costs to a maximum value of R250 000 can be awarded with a budget justification
10. The fellowship is awarded for 12 months with possibility of renewal for further 12 months contingent on satisfactory academic progress
11. The Fellowship will be granted without fringe benefits; the successful candidate will be responsible for his/her own medical aid and insurance arrangements.
12. No services will be required of the candidate in return for the Fellowship
13. UCT will apply to SARS for tax exemption on behalf of the Fellow.
14. The recipient is expected to fulfil NIH requirements for training in Human Subjects Protection and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).
15. Fellows will be required to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the University of Cape Town, and a Memorandum of Understanding with the research host.
16. All academic outputs resulting from the funding will be required to acknowledge the Fogarty training program funding
