A message from the Director of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine, and CIDRI-Africa Emeritus Principal Investigator, Prof. Valerie Mizrahi, on the passing of Prof. Tim Egan:

"It is with deep sadness that I write to inform you that Tim Egan, Jamison Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at UCT and Affiliate member of the Institute, passed away on Sunday 1 May after a short illness borne with great courage.

Internationally renowned for his work on understanding how the malaria parasite deals with the large influx of haem associated with ingestion and degradation of haemoglobin in its digestive vacuole and the effects of antimalarials that inhibit this process, Tim was a Fellow of UCT, and past winner of the UCT Distinguished Teacher Award, and Gold Medal of the South African Chemical Institute. Most recently, Tim was awarded an “A” rating from the NRF, confirming his standing as a world leader in his field.

Above all, Tim Egan was an absolute gentleman – a “mensch”, in the truest sense of the word. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with this wonderful man.

We hold Tim’s family and friends in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Val"

Our condolences to Tim's family, friends, colleagues and students.
