Prof Zühlke Takes Up Acting Deputy Dean of Research Position
I am pleased to announce that Professor Liesl Zühlke has accepted my invitation to be Acting Deputy Dean: Research from 1 May 2021 to the 31 October 2021 or until a permanent appointment is confirmed. Liesl will be in the Deanery three days a week during this acting period. Liesl holds an MB CHB DCH FCPaeds Cert Card MPH FACC FESC MSc PHD. She is a paediatric cardiologist at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and directs the Children’s Heart Disease Research Unit focused on family-centred research into Children’s Heart Diseases of relevance in Africa.
Her research projects span Congenital and Rheumatic Heart Disease, HIV in adolescents, Grown-Up Congenital Heart Disease and cardiac disease in women of childbearing age.
She is an NRF-rated researcher with an H-Index of 40 and over 28 000 citations. A multi-award winning scholar, Liesl has contributed substantially to leadership nationally, continentally and globally. As the only womxn Full Professor of Paediatric Cardiology in the country, she is an active and vociferous advocate for the advancement and empowerment of womxn in the health sciences.
Her greatest joy in life is family: her husband Alexander, a plastic surgeon, her children, Gabriel and Eli, and she loves hiking and enjoying nature with them and their dogs.
